Description: WW2 RAF "WAR" edition map entitled "MIDLANDS, SOUTH" (BATTLE of BRITAIN era) The Battle of Britain began in July 1940, coincidentally the same month that British military maps began to feature month digits in their print codes. This 1940 sheet lacks such a digit, dating it to between January 1940 and June 1940, so it would almost certainly have been issued in time for the Battle of Britain. (During the course of the War, the Sheet 8 map became known simply as "MIDLANDS", and sacrificed some of its Westernmost coverage in favour of including the outskirts of N.W. London.)
