ITEM(s) OVER 135 YEARS OLD!! James Lawrence (1781-1813) was an American naval officer, born in Burlington, New Jersey. He joined the U.S. Navy as a midshipman at the age of 17 and in 1802 was commissioned lieutenant. He participated in the war against Tripoli in 1804. He was promoted to master commandant in 1811 and to captain two years later. During the War of 1812, Lawrence commanded the Hornet, which defeated the British vessel Peacock. On May 6, 1813, he was given command of the frigate Chesapeake, which on June 1, 1813, engaged the British frigate Shannon in a 15-minute battle off the Massachusetts coast. The Chesapeake was heavily damaged and captured. Lawrence, although fatally wounded, issued a final command: "Tell the men to fire faster and not to give up the ship; fight her till she sinks."
