In the early 20th Century, Louis William Shastock, son of a Hungarian immigrant, established a business manufacturing music products, including a successful line of brasswind mutes. L.W. Shastock's company was sold, eventually becoming known as Micro Music Products, but the new owners continued to use the name "Shastock" for many years. Their mid-century marketing boasted the following: "There is much more to a mute than shape or appearance. A truly scientifically designed mute will control sound not tone! MICRO Shastock mutes are built on scientific principles of acoustics. Shastock mutes are constructed of the finest materials available and fashion by skilled craftsman. They are acoustically tested for the job they're designed to do before your dealer makes them available to you. Shastock mutes are used by leading artists the world over and are enthusiastically endorsed for the player who takes his work seriously." Some of the most popular mutes of their day, and still sought after by collectors, the Shastock mutes were tools of the trade for the working trumpet player. Shastock claimed to mute sound, not tone. Indeed, these speak with a clarity not always found in "stone-lined" mutes, and are considered by many to be the best of the closed-cup mutes. Their distinctive design made the Shastock easy to spot, even from across the room. See those offset corks? That's a hallmark of the Shastock brand mutes. The Shastock mutes and cups came in a small variety of colors, but this handsome mute is white with a gold cup. The thumb screw on cup is plain. The bottom of the mute is painted. This item is from a lot of four vintage Shastock mutes that came to us via a Los Angeles based principal trumpet player and longtime friend of Uan's.
