Description: Here on offer is a scarce vintage gilt metal and bevelled glass pocket “locking” compass with metal dial by G. LUFFT, of Stuttgart, Germany, circa 1930. The compass has a gilt metal case with a suspension ring and a sliding locking mechanism, that works perfectly. It has a steel grey metal dial that is finely stamped with the black compass points and on the outer edge, the individual 360 degree markings. The needle is a bi-metallic version with a blued finish to the North facing half. It still retains its original bevelled glass that is undamaged. The is no maker mark, but I believe it was made by LUFFT and has a model reference of ‘No. 440’, that was made around 1930. This is the version without the hinged lid, which was known as the No. 440 D. LUFFT was a German company located near Stuttgart and apparently, LUFFT only manufacturated the BÉZARD compass. A car compass and a diver's wrist compass with identical features are also known. All other items were produced either by BUSCH, STOCKERT or by the French manufacturer HOULLIOT. You can see an example of this type of compass at the online compass museum at: https://compassmuseum.com/pocket/pocket_3.htm#LUFFT Overall, the compass is in excellent condition, it just has some slight staining on the metal dial face.It measures 1.5” (3.7cm) diameter, 0.4” (1cm) thick and weighs 23g. Please see my pictures for the details of the condition, which complement this description. Please note that this item is also being offered for sale on my own website BOAS Militaria and therefore may be withdrawn at any time.
