About the artist: Paul Colin (1892-1985) was a prolific master of poster illustration, producing over 1,900 in his lifetime, as well as book designs, theater sets, and costume designs. Influenced by Cubism and Surrealism, he was known for his masterful integration of organic and figural subjects with geometric forms. Some of his best-known illustrations were made for jazz-age music and theater, as in his iconic images of dancer, singer, and actress Josephine Baker—his companion, muse, and a frequent subject in his work.
