Description: This original albumen silver print is similar to the one that just sold at Christie’s, from the Gladstone Collection in the Geddy Lee sale, where it achieved a price of approximately $113,000. 4 1/2 x 6 in. While these men are not identified, the verso bears a stamp from McKeesport, PA. Regiments from that city fought at Gettysburg, and soldiers from that city carried Lincoln’s body from Ford’s Theater. Civil War-related baseball images are exceedingly rare—I am aware of only two other images, one featured in Ken Burns and the other taken at Fort Pulaski (while it clearly depicts a bat-and-ball game, I cannot definitively identify the Pulaski image as baseball). The men in this image wear medals denoting membership in the Grand Army of the Republic. Together with another collector, I will be listing many of the most important vintage baseball photographs in existence.
