Temple (Frédéric Jacques Temple) THIS CATALOG WAS A SALES CATALOG ISSUED TO PURCHASE THE BOOK VESUVIUS - CATALOG NOT THE BOOK ITSELF. The text of noted French poet and author, PJ. Temple, is skillfully interpreted by Arthur Secunda in the form of 15 original, handprinted etchings. 1944 was a year of reckoning for the people of Italy. The Allies were pushing north toward Rome and the end of Mussolini's bitter 20 year reign was in sight. Once again the ancient land was caught in the havoc of war. General strikes closed factories, food shortages brought hunger, and a trail of pestilence and suffering followed the conquering armies. Then, on one balmy March afternoon, the land around Naples began to tremble. Vesuvius had awakened. Vesuvius is a unique, brilliantly executed fine art book. The text of noted French poet and author, PJ. Temple, is skillfully interpreted by Arthur Secunda in the form of 15 original, handprinted etchings. Set in wartorn Naples, the awesome power of nature manifested in Vesuvius is balanced against the equally powerful and terrifying reality of war. The resulting book is a haunting original statement on the frailty of man, the testimony of a city as it crosses the transparent line between tragedy and miracle. The prints depicted are shown actual size. The captions are quotations taken directly from Temple's original text. THIS CATALOG WAS A SALES CATALOG ISSUED TO PURCHASE THE BOOK - CATALOG NOT THE BOOK ITSELF The physical presentation of Vesuvius is as dramatic as the contents. Each of Secunda's 15 illustrations is an original aquatint etching. These are not reproductions of originals - Secunda personally prepared a separate plate for each of the 15 images and they were painstakingly hand-printed on a screw-type etching press. Each is thus an original print. The paper is Arches - a heavy 100% rag paper imported from France. The book is bound in an exquisite three piece binding, with black leather on the spine and reinforced covers of handmade marble paper from France. The title has been stamped in 22 karat gold on the spine; a slipcase is provided to supply protection for this valuable volume. The edition is strictly limited to 250 copies. Each book in the edition has been signed and numbered by the artist. Issue Price: $195.00 Please note that only 250 books are available. We sincerely urge you to subscribe without delay.
