Very Nice WW2 Australian M1907 SMLE Bayonet w/Scabbard

Description: The Pattern 1907 bayonet, officially called the sword bayonet was a British bayonet designed to be used with the Short Magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE) rifle. The Pattern 1907 bayonet was used by both British and Australian forces throughout both WW1 and WW2. It consists of a 17 inch one piece still blade and tang, with a cross guard and pommel made from wrought iron or mild steel, and a wooden grip usually made of walnut secured to the tang by two screws. The entire bayonet was 21.75 inches long. The pattern 1907 bayonet was supplied with a leather scabbard fitted with a steel top-mount and chape. The blade appears to be an early model made at the Australian Small Arms Factory, Lithgow. The initials MA are there above the 1907 date (7 is missing but the 190 is there) and the #1. MA was the designation for the Lithgow arsenal. In addition, there are no British proofs that I can find on the ricasso. No maker mark like Sanderson or Wilkinson that are usually on a British made M1907 bayonet. Bayonet production at Lithgow began in 1913 and ceased in 1927. Production resumed at Lithgow in 1940. Bayonet production was moved from Lithgow to Orange arsenal in July 1942, where most of Australia's Second World War bayonets were produced. The blade is in excellent condition. It retains nearly all of its original blue surface. There is a line of blue missing along the spine due to the blade rubbing on the scabbard. The edge and tip are nice. On the ricaaso it is faintly marked MA, 190 (1907) and a 1, 6 and 44. This bayonet was issued in June of 1944. The obverse has the government up arrow inspection mark, a X (bend test mark), the initials OA (for Orange arsenal). The hilt is in very good condition. The wooden handles are nice with a pleasing mahogany color. There are a few small gouges on one side and minor scratches on both sides. The pommel and cross guard retain a lot of their original blue. The pommel has about 85% of its blue. The release button works. The scabbard is the typical Second World War Australian manufacture. The throat is attached to the body with 3 exposed rivets indicating WW2 era manufacture. The metal throat end mount carry the Orange arsenal "OA" manufacturer's mark. The leather scabbard body is in very good condition and was produced by the Sidney area tannery, Mangrovite Belting Pty. Both the steel end mount and throat piece retain a lot of original blue. The steel pieces have some light scattered spots of oxidation/rust. The stitching in the side seam is sound. The leather body is a nice light chocolate brown color and has some minor scuffs, scratches and nicks. The leather body is clearly marked Mangrovite 1944 near the throat. On the other side near the throat is B with broad inspection arrow above it. Folks, this is a very nice Australian WW2 Enfield bayonet for your collection! Please look at the pictures.
