The Journey of a Multiracial Family, 6 Generations of an Eastern Shore Family

Description: In the year 1640 the Gingaskin Indians, displace from their land in Old Town Neck by John Kendall, made application to Governor Wm Berkeley for an unused portion of the land belonging to the Savage family to be used as a settlement for their tribe. The governor directed that 650 acres be laid off for the use of the Gingaskin Indians. Prior to 1791, four Francis men came to Gingascount and through intermarriage became a part of the tribe. There is no way to know how long the Francis men had been there before they were trackable, so the story of the Francis family begins in 1791 in Gingascount. About the author: Frances Beatrice Bibbins Latimer was a graduate of Hampton University, and received a Masters degree from New York City University. Frances took an interest in studying county records and published two transcriptions through a Maryland firm which later inspired the birth of her own publishing company. What became a world renowned business, Hickory House produced dozens of works including a guide that interprets Eastvilles court records and a volume that cataloged African American historical sites on the Eastern Shore. In 1998 she was featured in a PBS documentary series called Africans In America. Her work became a significant contribution to the series teachers guide, titled Americas Journey Through Slavery, which was underwritten by the National Endowment for the Humanities and endorsed by the National Council of the Social Studies. Frances has given talks and workshops at the Christopher Newport University, the Eastern Shore Community College, and Lower Shore Genealogical Society at Salisbury State University and many other venues. In 2004 she received the Woman in History award from the Northampton County Chapter of the DAR.
