Description: SCHERGER - A biography of Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Scherger KBE CB DSO AFC . RAAF. Rayner, HarryAustralian War Memorial, Canberra, ACT, Australia, 1984. Hard Cover in dust jacket, VG/VG CONDITION, (very small corner bump) 6 1/4 x 9 1/4, Australian first edition, 201 pages, illus., appendices, index.-------------------------Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Scherger, KBE CB DSO AFC, the dynamic, colourful, and always controversial subject of this book was Australia's first indigenous "four-star" airman. A superb pilot with experience in over 60 aircraft types, his flying exploits were legendary. His strong guiding hand in post-war defence matters is reflected to this day by the aircraft equipping the Royal Australian Air Force--------------------The regularity with which American aircraft were bought in preference to those of British manufacture has often prompted the accusation that Scherger was anti-British. This view is examined against a background of humiliation suffered as a teenager of German extraction during World War I, and later after his virtual "sacking" by the British chief of the RAAF during the witch hunt which followed the Japanese destruction of Darwin in February 1942. While Scherger generally got on well with British servicemen under his command during the Malayan Emergency of the 'fifties, there are stories of memorable arguments with some very senior British leaders. -----------Scherger's gregarious personality, along with his deliberate use of a seemingly endless repertoire of risque stories, masked the fierce personal determination which was part of his national heritage, but only rarely unveiled to outsiders. The life of Scherger, characterised by bouncing back after crushing reversals, reflects that determination in full measure.------------------Invariably diplomatic in dealing with politicians and international representatives based in Australia, he nevertheless needed little persuasion to press his views on potentially divisive issues. "If you want allies, you've got to support allies," was his savage retort to opponents of Australia's entry into the Vietnam conflict, and his hard-nosed advocacy of nuclear weapons for the Australian Defence Force never varied. His support for the purchase of the American F-111 bomber against the British aerospace industry's much-vaunted alternative, the TSR-2, resulted in a London Cabinet Minister complaining to Menzies about Scherger's undue influence. Australia finally bought the F-111.2018 NEW TERMS******************************************************************** THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING WITH US - WE VERY MUCH APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS. INTERNATIONAL POSTAGE NOTICE ! AS OF MAY 14th, 2007, THE US POSTAL SYSTEM HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED INTERNATIONAL MAIL RATES - ALL SURFACE MAIL HAS BEEN DROPPED, THERE WILL ONLY BE TWO CLASSES OF AIR MAIL= PRIORITY OR FIRST CLASS. Due to increasingly higher postal rates, and the many packages that seem to be lost or damaged, on International Mail, we now only will ship internationally via E-Bay’s Global shipping program, which goes by courier services. Import duties, taxes, and charges are NOT INCLUDED in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding / buying. These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up. Do not confuse them for additional shipping charges. We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as "gifts". U.S. and International government regulations prohibit such behavior. ON PAPER BACK BOOKS & MAGAZINES, MANY TIMES WE CAN COMBINE SEVERAL BOOKS AND SAVE POSTAGE IN THE US ONLY. If you have further questions - happy to answer them - please us. Please browse our other items and bookmark our site - we constantly add new items. We pack your item extremely carefully so you will receive it in the best condition. Please be patient- we aim to provide the best service we can. We have been in business 50 years. VINTAGE PAPERBACK BOOKS Please be aware that the binding glue in vintage paperbacks is likely to be much drier than newer books, and thus more fragile than more modern printings. SHIPPING TIMES WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAST THESE NEW RATES WILL ACTUALLY BE, SO PLEASE BE PATIENT. WE ARE EXPERIENCING 2 – 6 WEEKS AS BEFORE DEPENDING ON THE CLASS OF MAIL USED . Shipments inside the US are also experiencing massive slowdowns, please be patient. Media Sometimes is taking 1 to 4 weeks with no rhyme or reason as to why. IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST THE TIMES STATED ABOVE. PLEASE DO NOT START ASKING WHERE IT IS IN A WEEK OR TWO AND ACCUSE ME OF NOT SENDING THE ITEM - SLOW DELIVERY TIMES BY THE POST OFFICE ARE NOT MY FAULT, PLEASE BE PREPARED TO WAIT THE AVERAGE TIMES I HAVE STATED. ( Due to be budget shortfalls and massive job cuts, and projected closing of many distribution centers, that are being implemented by the US Post Office - we are already seeing delivery times longer than was seen previously – please be patient ) WE HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR OVER 50 YEARS & WE KNOW BY BITTER EXPERIENCE JUST HOW SLOW THE MAIL CAN BE.
