THE BUILDING OF CASTLE HOWARD BEGAN IN 1699 THE CREATION OF CHARLES HOWARD 3RD EARL OF CARLISLE AND HIS TWO ARCHITECTS SIR JOHN VANBRUGH (WHO HAD NEVER BUILT ANYTHING IN HIS LIFE BEFORE) AND NICHOLAS HAWKSMOOR. TOGETHER THEY BUILT THE HOUSE AND FILLED THE EXTENSIVE LANDSCAPE WITH GARDENS WATERWAYS WOODS SCULPTURE AND MONUMENTS. IN 1940 MUCH OF THE HOUSE WAS DAMAGED IN A DISASTROUS FIRE BUT THE LATE GEORGE HOWARD SET ABOUT RESTORING THE HOUSE AND OTHER BUILDINGS. HE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST BRITISH OWNERS TO OPEN THEIR HOUSES TO THE PUBLIC IN THE 1950S.
