Description: Original 1902 antique color lithographed map of the large Indonesian island of Sumatra. The cartography is by George Franklin Cram, and the image area measures 24 x 31.3 cm [9½" x 12¼"]. There is fine historical and ethnographic detail throughout, with hundreds of place names. Longitude is measured from Greenwich and Washington. This map was published during the Aceh War, when Dutch colonial forces were engaged in a conflict with the armies of the sultans of the province of Aceh, at the northern end of the island. The map labels the Strait of Sunda, separating Java and Sumatra, the two main islands in the Indonesian archipelago. Today there are plans to build a bridge connecting Merak Port in western Java with Bakauheni Port in southern Sumatra, a project that was likely not even imagined as a possibility back when this map was printed.
