Description: Nippon Set 2 Dessert Plates Rising Sun Pink Purple Florals w/Gold 1911-1918 HTF Nippon Set of 2 Dessert Plates Rising Sun 1911-1918 Pink Purple Florals w/Gold NIPPON Exquisite Decorative SET of 2 DESSERT PLATES, Rising Sun mark, PINK & PURPLE Hand Painted FLORALS w/GOLD, from Moraimura Bros. in Noritake, Japan, circa 1911-1918 DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand painted dessert plate set was produced in a cheerful floral spray pattern using a pink, green, purple and yellow color palate. Thin black outlining defines the shape of the flowers & leaves. The design looks so eye-catching. Each plate has 3 narrow bands of gold with an ivory band between the outer 2 bands. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks or wear on the gold. As is common with porcelain of this era, there are very small black cinder ash spots under the glaze on one of the plates. This is from the coal fired kiln. See photos #9 & #10. DIMENSIONS: Each plate has a diameter of 6 5/16" with a height of 3/4". HISTORY/MARKS: Morimura Bros. formed the trading and decorating company in 1876 which evolved into Noritake. Noritake Company has a rich history of producing fine bone china all the way from January 1, 1904 when the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan. The first reported U.S. registry for a Noritake backstamp for importing is 1911. In Collecting Noritake A to Z Art Deco & More, David Spain shows that Noritake substituted Japan for Nippon in their backstamps starting in 1918. The Rising Sun Mark is attributed to Noritake and its forerunner in the 1890’s to 1921 time period. In ABC’s of Collecting Nippon Porcelain, Joan Van Patten attributes the Rising Sun’s mark to since 1911 and records this as mark #84. This seems to narrow the window of use for the Rising Sun mark to 1911-1918. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
