Description: This Nakamichi ZX-7 was fully restored and serviced this year. I have owned this unit for about 20 years. I bought it from the original owner. Recent work done includes replacement of belts, idler wheel and pinch roller assembly; cleaning/lubrication of transport, switches and pots; calibration and setting of azimuth angles and comprehensive testing. It is ready for 50 more years of making beautiful music The Nakamichi ZX-7 is the younger sibling of the infamous Nak Dragon, but is an icon in its own right. Nakamichi created what is in effect a miniature professional reel-to-reel machine. The ZX-7 features Naks Discrete Head Technology in which the record, play and erase heads are mechanically as well as electrically independent. This reduces crosstalk and allows each head to be contoured for smoothest response. Of even more importance, the mechanically independent heads of the ZX7 can be adjusted individually for proper azimuth and allow the user to readjust record-head azimuth to correct for differences in tape path from cassette to cassette. The ZX-7’s claim to fame was its multiple adjustments for standard type I tape, type II (chrome) and type IV (metal) tapes, allowing the user to adjust record azimuth, bias, EQ and record level/balance. The ability to fine tune these adjustments was a big part of what gave the flagship Nakamichi decks their ability to capture so much musical information on that tiny strip of tape, often putting lesser open-reel decks to shame, albeit at a much higher price. Along with all the adjustments, the deck has a full logic transport that is like butter. But the best part is the sound. This deck truly did have many of the attributes of an open-reel deck with a frequency response that extended out to 22kHz with metal tape, Specifications: Year of manufacture: 1979 MSRP $1299 ($5000 in 2024 dollars) Type: Discrete 3-head, single compact cassette deck Track System: 4-track, 2-channel stereo Tape Speed: 4.8 cm/s Discrete Heads: 1 x record, 1 x playback, 1 x erase Motor: 1 x reel, 1 x capstan Tape Type: type I, CrO2, Metal Noise Reduction: Dolby B and C Frequency Response: 20Hz to 21kHz (Metal tape) Signal to Noise Ratio: 72dB (dolby C) Wow and Flutter: 0.04% Total Harmonic Distortion: 0.8% Input: 50mV (line) Output: 1V (line) Dimensions: 450 x 135 x 300mm Weight: 9.5kg
