Description: Rare 1719 2nd Latin Edition of Isaac Newton's Great Book: Optice (Opticks in English). Fine Cond.Collated complete w/ twelve folding plates. Prelim. advertisement page preceding the title page and errata page on xii of the preliminaries. I purchased this fine book from the noted London antiquarian booksellers, Pickering and Chatto LTD in 1995. The pages are in pristine, clean condition, untrimmed w/ deckled (uneven) edges. All folding plates are bright and fine. I had the book professionally rebound in period style (mottled reddish/brown calf) by the noted Heritage Bookshop bindery many years ago. Along with Newton's Principia Mathematica, his ground-breaking Opticks/Optice which deals with the nature and behavior of light rates as one of the great scientific texts of all time. A rare, affordable opportunity to own a fine, early edition of one of Newton's two great masterworks. The 2nd English edition of Opticks, was published one year prior to this Latin edition. It should be noted that all three of the Principia's original editions were published solely in Latin - the learned language of Europe in the day! This rare book was published in London during Newton's lifetime (died in 1727). A rare opportunity to own a great scientific book.
