Description: INDIAN WARS, U.S. ARMY, M1895, OFFICERS, FORAGE CAP, INDIAN SCOUTS U.S. Officer's M1895 Visored Cap. Original era manufacture. A clean example of the last dark blue wool forage cap adopted for the U.S. Army. Blue wool body. Blue wool top with a cap band, and a nice silver Indian Scout crossed arrows insignia. Gilt chin cord secured by two cuff size gilt federal regulation eagle buttons to the sides. Black patent leather visor with matching edge binding in good repair and securely stitched to the body of the hat. Intact brown leather sweatband, again securely stitched in place, with a size tag showing 6-7/8. Black lining in good repair with no fraying or tears. The hat is clean, not crushed or broken, and amazingly for its age in good overall condition. Inside of crown is lined with black cloth and maker marked "R.H. MORGAN, MANUFACTURER, SHENANDOAH, PA". The interior displays typical wear to the lining and leather sweatband. There are several moth nips on the edge of the crown. The left side of the visor displays wear. The sticking on the leather sweatband has detached near the back of this cap. Note: The Scouts insignia is original to the cap. This was an early version of the Scouts cap insignia which was changed in 1892 with two crossed arrows made of nickel or of some white metal or silver, three inches in height with the letters USS in the intersection of the arrows. as a reference, please refer to page 287, Figure 24-3, "Encyclopedia of United States Army Insignia and Uniforms, by William K. Emerson" This was the U.S. Army's first transition to a visor cap after leaving the traditional kepi design. The M1895 Officers Forage Cap was a semi-dress military cap adopted by the United States Army in 1895 for officers, featuring a stiff, flat crown, a small visor, and a band with insignia, typically worn as a casual headwear option during the late 19th century, often made of a dark blue or khaki fabric depending on the service branch and period. Adopted in 1895, replacing the old “French style” forage cap (or Kepi), this cap was not looked upon favorably by the old line officers of the Army, referring to it as that “damned conductor’s cap.” Cap is in overall good condition, and comes ready to display in your Indian War collection!
