Description: Hans Brosamer TheDeath of Abel, from Catechismus für die gemeine Pfarrherr und PredigerWoodcut,1550, only state, thread margins P. 130 x 130 mm This print is an illustrationfor a Latin edition of Martin Luther’s ‘Catechismus fürdie gemeine Pfarrherr und Prediger’ (Catechism for the common pastor andpreacher). Given the abundance of text on the verso, it can be assumed thisillustrated the Large Catechism – first published in April 1529 with woodcutsby the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder – not the Small Catechism. Itadorned the section on the 5th commandment: ‘Thou shalt not kill’. On the back ofthe paper mount is a modern attribution to Hans Baldung Grien with a date circa1520. A former attribution to the Paris book publisher Jakob Kerver (JacquesKerver) has been crossed out. ‘Protestant Catechism?’ is also noted, referringto the Latin text on the verso. A Latintranslation of the Large Catechism was made by Vincent Obsopoeus, which wasalso filled with classical quotations and allusions to ancient history.[1]Furthermore,the texts of the Large and Small Catechisms were included in the Lutheran Bookof Concord, published in German in 1580 and Latin in 1584.
