Also known as "scoria" or "cinder", it was hand-picked directly from the Springerville Volcanic Field, near the White Mountains of east-central Arizona. This is a somewhat unique listing ... we don't normally package four rocks together in our "Lava Rock Planters" category. But when you look at the photos, I think you'll see why. First off, these uniquely-shaped, exotic black & red combo rocks range in size from roughly 3½" to 5½" across their bases. You'll see LOTS of cracks and crevices along their surfaces, and pockmarks in a variety of shapes and sizes. Individually or combined, those features make these rocks perfect planters for small succulents, air plants, or certain varieties of epiphytics. They offer a chance for a very unique display in your garden, indoors or out! Scoria's most recognizable feature are the pockmarks appearing all along the surface. When they were first expelled from volcanoes that were active here over a half million years ago, hot gases were captured within the molten lava and trapped as it cooled, leaving thousands of tiny "pores" within the rock itself. These pores offer natural benefits that help certain varieties of succulents to even thrive compared to other planting methods. They allow air to pass to their shallow roots, while retaining moisture as water easily drains. Their native roughness offers a place for plants to grab hold and take root, too (it even promotes greater root growth and expansion).
