Description: GOLD QUARTZ SPECIMEN from DURANGO, MEXICO Ruler is 1/4" wide (6 mm). U.S. 10 cent coin is 17 mm in diameter. Weight: .7 Gram - 10.9 Grains (Troy) Size: 12X6.9X4.7 mm Most collectors on the hunt for 'wild gold' know how hard it is to find specimen-grade ore from Mexico. After years of searching, I finally stumbled on this tri-metallic occurrence. What looks like gold is gold, not pyrite, not silver. This lively chunk is comprised of a dense, bi-color, silicate host, possibly granodiorite. Mixed into this melange is shiny black galena. My source told of his mineral-collecting exploits dating back to the 1970s. Traveling near Durango, Mexico, he purchased this ore from a vendor he met along the road. Apparently, locals had mined it east of Mazatlan in the Sierra Madre Mtns. This splendid little rock shows real gold. I guarantee it. For those who've kept track of my store these past several years, you know I don't sell low-grade, faux specimen. If it shows real gold, it can't be low grade. I deal in naturally-occurring ores with visible gold and other silicate minerals w/gold specimen. These high-grade beauties are hard-to-find and expensive to obtain. My prices aren't based on the amount of gold contained, but upon the authenticity, rarity, and collectibility of these unique pieces. If you've a piece of genuine ore, but can't see any gold, crushing, milling, and panning it may produce 'fly-specks' of flour. I've bought specimens which showed gold, but basically were fakes. Many 'leaverites' offered glisten with mica, shimmering-quartz crystals, or pyrite. Poor photographic equipment and technique creates a glare. Even that is used attempting to dupe unknowledgable collectors. Chalcopyrite bears a strong resemblance to gold, but unlike gold, it can be crushed. Gold, on the other hand, is malleable, fairly soft, will streak (on a test streak plate). You can flatten it with a hammer. 1983 degrees Farenheit of heat will melt it. Years ago, finding one small rock like this would have made my day. If you've hunted for gold in the bush, you know the feeling. Please check my feedback for any disputes rising from non-authenticity issues. There are none. Specimen weight: .7 Gram - 10.9 GrainsSize - 12X6.9X4.7 mm Ruler (if shown) is 1/4" wide (actual size). A U.S. 10 cent piece is often used to show size of the item for sale. FAST REFUND In case you're unhappy with this specimen, I offer a money back guarantee which includes your initial S&H. With regards to my gold quartz parcels, gold quartz specimens, slabs, and cabochon, I only deal in rocks containing naturally-occurring, visible gold. I believe most of us interested in oro (Atomic symbol Au) would like to see authentic, native gold in specimens; gold embedded there by nature's elemental forces, not by some man's hand. It's an aesthetic we share and that's what I sell - authentic, natural, gold quartz (with VG visible gold). For those who know the ups and downs of the precious metals market, this is a heck of a deal. Buy it and if the market drops dramatically in the next 30 days, you can return it for what you paid for it. That's a pretty cool insurance policy for precious metal buyers. I think most specimen buyers, however, are more interested in these rocks for their intrinsic beauty and collectability than they are for their gold content. VIRGIN POCKETS Once, there was a time I felt like King of the Drywashermen. Until the rains came, a prospector could hike into the boonies with a drywasher on his back. Then, after considerable prospecting, digging exploratory holes and such, a guy might sometimes hit a virgin pocket in ground overlooked by the old timers. Prospecting was 'the juice'. Finding virgin gold, unearthing it where no one else had thought to look, that was more satisfying than how much gold you dropped in your poke. So we're not talking a lot of gold here. In the SW Arizona desert, big pay-streaks and monster nuggets never were the norm. It might have been an entirely different story if I'd been prospecting in Australia. Down Under, ten ounce nuggets had once been the rule, not the exception. I mean, WOW! Back at home in Arizona's hungy, isolated goldfields, a quarter ounce lead or half pennyweight nugget represented a major find. Boy, was it a thrill to find one too. Working such slim pickings, a guy doesn't get jaded. Since expectations are low to begin with, every little nugget seems as big as a lemon. Watching Youtube gold hunters, they zip around here, there, everywhere on their fast ATVs, trail bikes, and 4-wheelers. They seem mostly intent on reaching point B from point A as fast as their wheels can carry them. They move so fast they're just a blurry cloud of dust to the Gila Monsters. The riders themselves, in their haste to reach some rich, remote destination, could care less about the wonders of nature. For me, prospecting was as much about appreciating our natural world as it was stuffing gold in my poke. But hey! Each to his own, I reckon. Gold of Eldorado 3-10-13
