PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED by GUSTAVE DORE!** THE DIVINE COMEDY by Dante Alighieri Translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED by Gustav Dore. Midway upon the journey of our life I found myself within a forest dark For the straightforward pathway had been lost. With these words, Dante plunges readers into the unforgettable world of the Inferno—one of the most graphic visions of Hell ever created. In the first part of the epic "The Divine Comedy". The "Divine Comedy" was entitled by Dante himself merely "Commedia," meaning a poetic composition in a style intermediate between the sustained nobility of tragedy, and the popular tone of elegy. The word had no dramatic implication at that time, though it did involve a happy ending. Here, Dante is led by the poet Virgil down into the nine circles of Hell, where he travels through nightmare landscapes of fetid cesspools, viper pits, frozen lakes, and boiling rivers of blood and witnesses sinners being beaten, burned, eaten, defecated upon, and torn to pieces by demons. Along the way he meets the most fascinating characters known to the classical and medieval world - the silver-tongued Ulysses, lustful Francesca da Rimini, the heretical Farinata degli Uberti, and scores of other intriguing and notorious figures. In the second volume, Purgatory, Dante contemplates the origins of sin as he struggles up the terraces of Mount Purgatory on his arduous journey toward God. and toward the Earthly Paradise and his beloved Beatrice, through "that second kingdom in which the human soul is cleansed of sin," all the passion and suffering, poetry and philosophy are rendered with the immediacy of a poet of our own age. Dante becomes the universal poet, sublime, grim, intellectual, simple, humorous, tender, and ecstatic. The third part, Paradiso, or Paradise, features one of the most sublime, luminous, and exciting visions in all of literature - that of Heaven itself. Having climbed the mountain of Purgatory, Dante begins to ascend to the heights of the universe with his beloved Beatrice as guide. They soar through the nine spheres of heaven - the moon, Mercury, Venus, the sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the stars, and the Prime Mover. Along the way Dante meets people he knew on Earth, who now appear as dazzling jewels, and many others whom he had always wanted to meet, such as St. Thomas Aquinas, Saint Bonaventure, and his great-great-grandfather. Finally, Dante reaches Heaven, where incredibly beautiful scenes -brilliant lights and colors, and flowering gardens - unfold before his eyes, always accompanied by celestial music. Heaven, he learns, is not a place of boring rest, but one of joyful activity, dancing and singing, and endless movement and surprises. A poem of true heroic fulfillment, Paradiso stands as literature's greatest hymn to the glory of God. Lyrically graceful and brimming with startlingly vivid images, Dante’s Divine Comedy is a perpetually engrossing classic that ranks with the greatest works of Homer and Shakespeare. This edition is also profusely and magnificently illustrated by one of the greatest artists to ever adorn the inside of a book, Gustav Doré! Seemingly, every other page has another full page illustration th accompany the magnificent prose. There are so many illustrations, that there have been books published on the drawings for this work alone! I have included many interspersed throughout this auction page, but they pale in comparison to the real deal and this is only a fraction of the pictures included! I was recently asked about the Canto notes that are a part of this edition. They appear as annotations under the Canto title. The eBayer who asked this question seemed to think this an important inclusion, so I am including this here. Dante Alighieri was born in Florence in 1265. Much of what we know of Dante’s earliest years comes to us from La Vita Nuova (The New Life, completed around 1293), in which he recounts his idealized love for Beatrice Portinari. Beatrice died in 1290 but remained Dante’s idealized love and muse throughout his life. She figures largely in La Divina Commedia (The Divine Comedy), which Dante probably began around 1308 during his extensive travels throughout Italy. Dante Alighieri is considered to be one of the world’s greatest poets. In the words of the twentieth-century poet T.S. Eliot, “Dante and Shakespeare, divide the world between them. There is no third.” 382 pages, 135 illustrations in all! Here are a few more for you to enjoy! A physical description follows... I have been collecting books and music for over 35 years and have amassed an enormous collection. I do not subscribe to "grading" as it is so subjective and most of the "graders" truly have no clue! Therefore I'll simply describe things in normal English! *A beautiful large hardcover book which in itself is a work of art. Bound with a pictorial cover that matches the dust jacket, it has gilt lettering and embellishments on the front of both the dust jacket and the book itself! It is a previously perused copy but is in VERY GOOD condition and the last one I have in this state showing only a minimal amount of shelwear (and I MEAN minimal!) It is a magnificent copy and I challenge anyone to leave it out on a coffee table and I guarantee a discussion about it will follow. A simply fantastic book, worthy of any library! Regarding auctions, let me add that I am a private collector of art, books, music and "stuff" and am very picky about what I buy and I don't like surprises when I buy things from auctions any more than you do... Please Read on... GUARANTEED DELIVERY OR YOUR MONEY BACK! I really DO CARE about when and how your product gets to you. Because the post office is so incredibly inept, I ONLY SHIP domestic packages INSURED, which is AUTOMATICALLY INCLUDED in the shipping cost, and that is not free as the post office charges for it. If you are buying more than one of my items and would like to SAVE MONEY by COMBINING SHIPPING costs, I will be happy to do so, but eBay has now made it more difficult to get discounts by confusing people with "Buy it Now" and "Add to Cart" options on non-auction style pages. If you are buying one item from a seller use the Buy it Now. BUT IF YOU WANT COMBINED or FREE SHIPPING, DO NOT USE THE BUY IT NOW button! Instead, select ADD TO CART. Then use your BACK button on your browser and select the other items you want that qualify using ADD TO CART each time. When you are finished, look for the shopping cart icon at the top right corner of your eBay page and click on it. Find the blue button which reads COMMIT TO BUY & SEND REQUEST. Once done, the items will be held and I will create a single invoice with either combined or free shipping. NOTE: I cannot retroactively go back and combine items that are not purchased in this manner so PLEASE PAY ATTENTION. Once you receive your invoice, payment is expected promptly! I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THIS! You may click on the SHIPPING & PAYMENT tab found at the top of the page, just under the item's picture for all shipping options to all destinations both domestic and international. There you will find drop down boxes for your location and you can then use the shipping calculator to determine the correct cost for where you live. REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT SHIPPING TIMES: Media Mail (once known as 4th class mail) is a special class of postage for books, music, videos and other printed media available within the US and territories. It is far less expensive than Priority Mail, but - it ..... is ........... slooowwwww!!!! Despite USPS claims of 3-9 day delivery times, MEDIA MAIL CAN actually TAKE UP TO 3 WEEKS to arrive, and their tracking info is frequently not updated until it actually arrives, making that feature pretty useless! PLEASE remember this when you leave feedback scores as the choice is yours and not my fault if it takes a long time to get there! If you want it in a week or less, you are going to have to bite the bullet and pay for Priority Mail which will get it there in 2-3 working days, 99% of the time, but it is more expensive. Basically, the choice is yours, but if you choose media mail, please don't write to me in 5 days asking where your package is, because the post office will have it and most of the time, they don't have a clue! International deliveries usually arrive within 1-2 weeks but CAN take up to a month! Faster shipping is available on request, but expensive.Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. You can check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying. Finally, we do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as "gifts"; it is illegal and immoral. Questions? Ask and I'll try to answer...
