Description: 116pp., cloth boards, Robert Nye, illustrated by Alan E. Cover, 1968, First edition, first printing. With dust jacket and protective archival cover. Written especially for young readers, Robert Nye said of the work that "This is an interpretation, not a translation. My theme seems to me to have a peculair importance for children, as for poets: it lives in them. "He comes out of the darkness, moving in on his victims in deadly silence. When he leaves, a trail of blood is all that remains. He is a monster, Grendel, and all who know of him live in fear. Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, knows something must be done to stop Grendel. But who will guard the great hall he has built, where so many men have lost their lives to the monster while keeping watch? Only one man dares to stand up to Grendel's fury --Beowulf." Robert Nye FRSL (15 March 1939 – 2 July 2016) was an English poet and author. His best selling novel Falstaff, published in 1976, was described by Michael Ratcliffe (writing in The Times) as "one of the most ambitious and seductive novels of the decade", and went on to win both The Hawthornden Prize and Guardian Fiction Prize. The novel was also included in Anthony Burgess's 99 Novels: The Best in English Since 1939 (1984).
