It is a good mix of styles. We are offering an an antique/ vintage Italian pottery beautiful lustro Italian Renaissance Revival majolica vase, measuring about 7 ⅞ tall, 2 ⅞ in diameter at the opening, and 6" in diameter. This is a very nice piece of Rubboli majolica or 'tin-glazed faience' from Gualdo Tadino in the province of Perugia (the Umbria region of Italy), and dating to the period 1931 - 1935. The factory was founded in the late 1800s by one of Italy's most celebrated Renaissance-revival ceramists, Paolo Rubboli (1838-1890). That's the "PR" initials under the triangle. The S.C.U. in a triangle is for "Societ Ceramica Umbra" a name adopted from 1920 when production was split into two locations, one in Gubbio, and the other, where this vase was produced, in Gualdo Tadino under the directorship of Paulo Rubboli's son Alberto Rubboli, Giuseppe Baduel. It's a really well-executed example of the revival of the magnificent Italian Renaissance decoration of the 16th century made in the famous ceramic workshops of Pesaro, Deruta, Gubbio and of course Faenza which is how faience got its name. The vibrancy of the palette is created by first covering the entire vessel with a base coat of white tin glaze to hide the (usually) red or terracotta pottery. The white is allowed to dry and then painted over with the colors. The colors are slightly translucent so the light reflects back off the white tin glaze, illuminating them from the back, if you will, and making them so much brighter, almost like light shining through a stained glass window. The cleverest effect of all, and what collectors consider the holy grail of Italian majolica/faience, is the lustrous iridescent sheen that the best potters were able to produce, the so called golden and copper lustreware (lustro) glazes This piece is in a lovely rustic style with bold colored glazes in yellow, green, blue and red. The bottom is marked with a triangle mark and the words "S.C.U. in a triangle,Made in Italy/ PR. This piece is the perfect addition to any collection. 1L2z #12 3L potteryItalian majolica rubboli Rustic Italian Vase Green Payment Feedback Shipping Returns Payment Payment terms coming soon Feedback Feedback terms coming soon Shipping Shipping terms coming soon Returns Returns terms coming soon HomeAbout UsView all listingsContact UsShipping Copyright © 2018 EllisAntiques.
