Description: This intricately, hand-carved Cinnabar Brooch, framed in a silver-toned filigree, is a wearable work of art. It's stamped CHINA on the back. This practice of stamping/identification on lacquered cinnabar brooches occurred 1900-1930. Although not marked silver, polishing up indicates there's some silver, possibly over brass. The history of cinnabar and its uses dates back to about 3000 BC. Cinnabar continues to be loved for its rich color which is considered a symbol of good fortune and happiness. Given the high toxicity of the mineral, the use of Cinnabar in jewelry was banned in the 19th Century. Measures 2”x.5”. Good antique condition but does have a very slight bend in the corner on the backside. Please see last picture to see how minor this issue is.
