Description: 3 Rare Vintage B&W Photos of the Construction of Route 8 in Canton, Ohio, 1930s? Three early moments on Route 8 in Canton, Ohio, probably from the 1930s. I bought these three photos at an estate sale of an Akron photographer, who was commissioned to chronicle the brick construction of Old Rte. 8 in Canton, Ohio. Photo 1 shows the building of the brick pavement without detouring traffic – you can see the road crew as well as an old car trying to maneuver around the road construction (not an unusual view every spring but this is probably from the 1930s). B&W, 8 x 10 crop marks in the margin with caption noted in ink in margin. Photo 2 shows the completed pavement with the truck surface tester trying out the brick highway (Rte 8). B&W, 7-1/4 x 10, crop marks in the margin, label across the bottom. (see photo) Photo 3 shows Canton Rte 8 four lane highway at night with the “ 4-lane brick pavement, lightedwith 24-10000 lumen siodium vapor lamps in GE airplane-type luminaires. Spacing is approximately 225’ apart in a double staggered arrangement – with alternate 5 and 12 foot brackets. Mounting height – 25’ to light center, 1 mile in length,” according to the caption on the back of the photo. A man is changing a tire in the photo – there are signs on the side of the road, including one that offers rooms to let (for the weary highway travelers presumably). B&W 8 x10, no crop marks in the margins. These are professionally taken photos. Someone with a stronger magnifying glass will be able to see other clues to date and locationsin the photos. These are great photos of one of the original state highways in Ohio, in its early days. A portion of these proceeds of this sale will go to the Red Cross, much needed in this time of crisis.
