Description: This is a souvenir medal that was awarded to Salt Lake City for winning the bid to host the Winter Games.A little history behind the date printed on the back of the medal.... BUDAPEST, June 16 -- Salt Lake City's 30-year Olympic quest ended in gold medal glory Friday with the International Olympic Committee awarding the 2002 Winter Games to the Utah State capital. Salt Lake's bid so impressed the IOC members, the Americans did not need to go beyond the first vote to gain a simple majority over their rival candidates -- Ostersund (Sweden), Sion (Switzerland) and Quebec City. The IOC Session gave Salt Lake an overwhelming 54 votes, outdistancing Ostersund (14)) Sion (14) and Quebec (7). Ninety-two voting papers were distributed, two were spoiled and one was returned blank. The Salt Lake delegation erupted into wild celebration as IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch announced the verdict. 'The International Olympic Committee has decided to award the Olympics of the 19th Winter Games in the year 2002 to the city of Salt Lake.' Bid chairman Tom Welch, who led Salt Lake's unsuccessful campaign for the 1998 Games four years ago, was a very relieved man. 'I was counting votes in my sleep last night,' he said. 'What a great way to wake up,' he added as he hugged his wife Alma and two of his children. 'Somebody's got to hold me up. They (the IOC members) told us we were different as a city and they would be there for us if we continued and they were.' Salt Lake had been chasing the Winter Olympics since 1965 and had to settle for second place four votes behind behind Japan's Nagano in the race for the 1998 Games. Excellent item to have for any collection! The medal measures 2 1/2" round x 1/8" thick. The details on the front and back are embossed.Great quality! Good Luck!
