1941 Press Photo General Philip Henry Sheridan poses with his staff - pio06311

Description: 1941 Press Photo General Philip Henry Sheridan poses with his staff - pio06311 This is an original press photo. Sheridan, General Philip Henry. "From Winchester - twenty miles away" rode General Philip Henry Sheridan, to be immortalized in poetry by Thomas Buchanan read after winning military glory sufficient for a man twice his size. For general Sheridan was a small man, below the medium but square shouldered and muscular, and nearly insensible to hardship. How small he was can best be visualized from this photograph of the doughty little general and his staff. General Sheridan was the leader who relieved the Union Cavalry from waste of energy and restored it as a most effective arm of military service. He was born at Albany, New York, in 1831, and graduated from West point in 1853. His earlier civil war service was rewarded when he was placed in command of the cavalry troops of the army of the Potomac in 1864 and after the close of the civil war he was thanked by congress for his distinguished service. He died in 1888 at Nonquitt, Massachusetts.Photo measures 8 x 10inches. Photo is dated 6-15-1941.
