1933 World's Fair Art Deco Desk Lamp, Gilbert Rohde Design for Mutual Sunset

Description: This historically important lamp is part of the permanent collection of the New York Metroplitan Museum of Art. It was designed by Gilbert Rohde for the 1933 century of progress "design for living house" exhibit and was manufactured by the Mutual-Sunset Lamp Manufacturing Company of Brooklyn, New York. Rohde was a self taught industrial designer influenced by both the Bauhaus and late french art deco. In the early 1930’s he convinced Herman Miller to introduce a modernist line of furnishings and associated decorative objects which ultimately led that company to the forefront of mass-produced modern design home and office furnishings. This desk lamp features a c-shaped arm supported by three contiguous polished chrome-plated steel rods. The cylindrical-shaped brass shade is arranged parallel to the base. The lamp retains its original keyless light socket. The polished chrome plating remains in good condition, considering age, and shows only very slight wear. The solid brass shade retains its patina and is in otherwise good condition. The lamp is in good working order and appears to have been rewired at some time. The cord incorporates a period bakelite in-line toggle power switch.
