Description: Very old cigar ashtray from Great Southern Life Insurance Co out of Houston, TX. Reads “J.S. Rice President, O.S. Carlton Vice President, J.T. Scott Treasurer, and Capital & Surplus $1,000,000.00.” Has the state of Texas in the base of the bowl with “The Big Texas Co” and “Great Southern Life Insurance”. Bottom reads “Patent Chas. W. Shonk Co. Chicago, U.S.A.” Was able to find an article on Colonel Jonas Shearn Rice who is listed on the ashtray stating he died in 1931, so based on that this ashtray is at least from the 1920s, if not older. Incredible piece with lots of Texas History.
