Description: 1812 LETTER J.H WHITMORE to ARTHUR JONES at CHASTLETON ..OXFORD CHRISTCHURCH LAWCover with entire letter from John Henry Whitmore in Badjer Shropshire 15th July 1812 to Arthur Jones in Chastleton near Chipping Norton; SHIFFNAL 146 boxed mileage; 8 in manuscript. Letter: 1812. When we left Chastleton my father intended only to carry me on to Oxford in order to have my name entered at Christchurch, but he afterwards altered his plans and took me on to town along with him. While we were in Oxford my father learned that it was useful to go himself to enter my name as an application by means of a letter would do as well. We did not stay long in Oxford but proceeded on our journey. The next day we reached town in a heavy storm of rain. The novelty of the scene was very amusing to me. I stayed in London some time; town was extremely full but it's gaiety was damped by the confusion of politicals. I returned to Badjer the first Sunday in June and went over to the china works as soon as I was able but I am sorry to say that I did not obtain the satisfactory answers which I had hoped for, but as I hope that we shall have the pleasure of meeting you at Dudmaston in September we can then go over to the china works together…. During my stay in town I was entered at Lincoln's Inn, it is yet a long while to look forward to before I shall begin my studies there. I hope you will not think that my delaying writing to you so long was owing to neglect or forgetfulness: it was actively on account of my not having obtained satisfactory intelligence. I should indeed be very ungrateful if I was to disregard anything which you, who have behaved so kindly toward me, wish me to do. It shall be my ambition to render myself worthy if possible of the kindness which you have shown me. Yours truly and affectionately, John Henry Whitmore.
