The greens are perfect in any salad situation, especially when younger. I like them in my omelets. They are also lovely prepared in southern-style greens dishes. The leaves are a staple in my morning smoothies. The leaves are quite nutritious, containing vitamins (high in A and C), isoflavone, and genistein. Genistein is believed to prevent prostate cancer, and research is currently investigating this. Viola sororia is the state flower of Illinois, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Wisconsin. This species is one of the easiest flowers to grow. It is hot and cold hardy. It can tolerate drought, flooding, shade, and direct sunlight.
